International Commemorative Events Held at the Site of the Historic Battle
Ceremonial events dedicated to the 82nd anniversary of the Battle of Lenino, one of the key episodes in the history of Soviet–Polish military cooperation during the Second World War, were held in the Mogilev Region of the Republic of Belarus. Each year, this commemorative date brings together representatives of public organizations, veterans, historians, and residents of different countries committed to preserving the memory of the joint struggle against Nazism.
Historical Significance of the Battle
The Battle of Lenino, fought on October 12, 1943, became the first combat engagement of the 1st Polish Infantry Division named after Tadeusz Kościuszko, formed on the territory of the Soviet Union. The battle symbolized the beginning of the combat path of Polish military formations created to participate in the liberation of Europe from Nazi occupation.
Despite heavy losses, the division’s participation in the battle marked an important stage in the formation of the Polish armed forces of a new era and served as an example of allied military cooperation during the war years.
Today, the battlefield remains an important memorial space where annual commemorative events are held to preserve historical memory and strengthen international dialogue.
Participants of the Commemorative Events
The ceremony was attended by representatives of public and veterans’ organizations from Belarus and Poland, as well as guests from the Russian Federation.
Among the participants were:
- Yuri Zhuravovich, Director of the Polish House in Mogilev;
- Bogdan Pokrovsky, representative of the Polish delegation;
- Elżbieta Sadzińska, Secretary General of the Union of Veterans of the Republic of Poland;
- representatives of Belarusian and Polish veterans’ organizations, local residents, and guests of the event.
The joint participation of delegations from different countries highlighted the international nature of preserving historical memory and the importance of intergenerational dialogue.
Memory as a Foundation for Cooperation
Commemorative events at Lenino traditionally serve not only as an act of tribute to fallen soldiers but also as a platform for strengthening humanitarian ties between nations. Through joint ceremonies, meetings, and the exchange of historical materials, a space of mutual respect and shared reflection on the past is formed.
Such events underpin international initiatives aimed at preserving documentary truth about the Second World War and transmitting historical memory to future generations.
